I was sitting with my granddaughter, and we were listening to One More Day by Sons of Sunday when the opening lyric came on, and it just hit me. You know when you have listened to a song several times, and then one day, while you are listening, the Holy Spirit steps in and grabs your heart. It is often at these times that He not only brings you new insight into the character of God, but He exposes something to you about yourself. We don’t always see ourselves in the correct light. Sometimes we see ourselves too favorably, and other times we discount ourselves. But God! He knows us. I mean, really knows us. He knows what we need to hear when we need to hear it. It is always about love. Anyway, back to the lyric.
The opening line of the song is “I’m a sinner, grace is still healing.” Think about that line: I’m a sinner, GRACE IS STILL HEALING. Now I have talked about grace, read about grace, and sung about grace, but today in the living room with my granddaughter on my lap, those words hit me like a lightning bolt.
It’s not that I am saying my identity is as a sinner, because my identity is as a daughter of the Almighty God. It is that sin is a condition, and try as I might, I am not perfect. I make mistakes, but they don’t define me. I am defined by God, and I am who He says I am. It is His Grace that is healing me. By that, I mean, it is really hard to walk through this life in our own strength. We can’t do it; it is impossible, and yet there are parts of our lives that we have not surrendered to Him. Parts of our lives that maybe we are still trying to fix, or trying to “get over,” or maybe there are parts of ourselves that we are still trying to forgive. Things in our struggle between spirit and flesh that make us think we are not worthy. Things that we know He wants to see us do more of, but we are too busy, or don’t feel equipped to do, or are to scared to do. When we are struggling or have a setback, God does not leave us, but sometimes we think He might. Sometimes we can’t hear Him, and He feels far away, but He is not. He has been there the whole time. So when I heard the lyric today, “I’m a sinner; grace is still healing.” The Holy Spirit showed me that grace is healing my doubt, my fear, my perception of how close God is to me. I might move from Him, but He does not move from me. It is His grace that heals the things in me that make me wonder if He is there, makes me wonder if I have done it this time and He is fed up with me, makes me wonder if I still have my giftings, makes me wonder if my faith is strong enough, makes me wonder if my problems are too trivial to take to Him. His grace heals us.
The second line of the song is “I’m a story, time is revealing.” Now, when you put those two lyrics together, “I’m a sinner, grace is still healing, I’m a story, time is revealing.” It is so clear to me. As His grace heals me, it takes time. During that time, He reveals to me more and more of who He is and who I am in Him. His grace heals my doubts and my fear. His grace shuts the mouth of the enemy that says I am worthless. His grace recovers my confidence and builds it in Him. His grace strengthens my faith and reminds me of all He has done and continues to do for me. He builds my story and reveals it page by page as I surrender to His grace and let it heal me. My story, like all of us who have been saved by grace, is a rags-to-riches story, but it is not free of struggle. In fact, the lyrics of this song capture that as well.
It goes like this
I’m a sinner, grace is still healing. I’m a story, time is revealing. I’m all of these things, but mostly, I’m thankful. Yes, I am. I’m a fighter caught in a struggle. A survivor rising above it. I’m all of these things, but mostly, I’m thankful. ‘Cause You gave me one more day to say I love You. You have brought me all this way to testify of grace. What more can I say, but hallelujah? Thank You, Jesus. ‘Cause You gave me one more day.
Don’t these lyrics just speak to your spirit? “I’m a fighter caught in a struggle. A survivor rising above it.” The Word tells us that we are more than conquerors through Christ who gives us strength. Those are not just words; that is a declaration. It is a promise that we can stand on.
