“I will take my place at the watchtower. I will stand at my post and watch. I will watch and see what He says to me. I need to think about how I should respond to Him when He gets back to me with His answer.” – Habakkuk 2:1 (VOICE)
In the previous chapter, we see the prophet Habakkuk crying out to the Lord. He is asking the Lord for answers in the midst of the wickedness that is surrounding him. The second chapter begins with Habakkuk waiting for the Lord to answer. While he waits, he says I will take my place at the watchtower. He knew that he needed to separate himself from the world and go up higher to get a different perspective. He needed to be able to see clearly what the Lord was saying. He goes on to say I will stand at my post and watch. I will watch and see what He says to me. He is going to stand where the Lord has planted him. He will stand there with faithfulness and patience knowing that the Lord will answer him. He will not be swayed by the wickedness or try to solve it on his own. He will stay standing at his post ready to respond when he hears from the Lord.
This made me think of how I am when I am seeking the Lord for answers. Do I pray and then try to solve it or do I pray and then climb up and take my place at the watchtower to get a higher perspective? Do I wait patiently upon the Lord? I think sometimes we pray and look, but we are looking for something specific. We have an idea about what the answer should be and what it should look like, so we are watching for that. When we do that we can miss the answer from the Lord because we are looking from the answer we already gave to ourselves. But when we climb up to the watchtower, we can see wider and we can see more of what is coming our way. Our perspective changes. I pray to wait on the Lord with patience and always stand my post in the watchtower.
