Psalm 1 is one of my favorite Psalms. The overall message in this chapter to me is “It’s how we stand.” The Psalm begins by saying “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.” – Psalm 1:1 (NIV).
We are not to stand like our old self when we were lost in sin. We are to stand tall and strong, rooted in the Word of God. We are that tree planted by the stream of living water. We are to stand firm in the Word, roots dug deep down in Christ, regardless of our circumstances, regardless of our feelings, regardless of what our eyes see. This is how we become a fruitful tree that won’t be blown around to and fro. This is how we become the kind of tree that bears fruit. It is by the way we stand.
I remind myself of this when I get in my flesh about something. I try to think about how I am standing at that moment. Am I firmly rooted in God’s promises or am I rooted in the comforts and pleasures of life?
