John 1:14 says “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (NIV)
As I think on this scripture I can’t help but think of how true this is. We have seen His glory. We do know who God is because Jesus reveals Him. (John 14:9) I am humbled when I think about what He revealed. When Jesus was beaten, spat upon, and crucified He showed restraint, forgiveness, sacrifice, and love. He showed us that even in our wickedness, God will restrain His hand and offer us forgiveness if we turn to Him. Like the thief on the cross, we don’t deserve it, but He does it out of love for us. If He didn’t restrain His hand of judgment on our world, if He fought back when we spit our acts of rebellion on Him or beat Him with our self-righteousness we would be in so much trouble and He knows that. So He holds back judgment to give us time to come to Him, to understand His love, to welcome His love, to reciprocate His love.
Jesus showed us that the Word is not just something we read, it is living and active. If we just examine His life and think about it in the context of what He reveals about God we will see the truth of His grace and love extended to us every minute of every day.
