This time of year I can’t help but think about the greatest gift I have ever received, Jesus Christ, my Love, my Lord, my Savior, my Friend! The book of Isaiah is my favorite book of the old testament as it is filled with prophesy about the Child Who Would Be Born For Us! As I was reading Isaiah 9:1-7 something struck me that I had not noticed before. In the NKJV we read “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulders. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” These are terms we are used to hearing about our Lord. When I read this same verse in the message bible it gave me a whole new understanding. In the Message Bible we read “For a child has been born—for us! the gift of a son—for us! He’ll take over the running of the world. His names will be: Amazing Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness.”
The word Wholeness struck me. I am used to hearing Prince of Peace, but reading the words Prince of Wholeness brought me a new depth of understanding of the peace He brings. Jesus is Peace and He is Wholeness. He comes into our lives and touches the broken parts of our lives and in restoring them to Wholeness He brings us Peace. Think about that for a minute. The world reminds us of every imperfection, every broken dream, every broken part of our soul because of hurt, disappointment, insecurity. Looking at ourselves through the lens of the world our brokenness is reflected and magnified. No wonder we have sleepless nights, restless hearts, and anxious spirits. When we take all of that to the Lord He reaches in and touches it; touches us with His grace and His peace. It wasn’t until I read this passage with the description of Christ as the Prince of Wholeness that I began to see Peace a little deeper. It isn’t just something that makes us feel good. It isn’t just something that lifts our burdens. It isn’t just something that we pray to receive; it is part of Who we are. Our true identity. It is part of the Wholeness we were created in before we were born in the brokenness of sin.
The title Prince means Sovereign. He is sovereign over our lives, over our peace ,and over our Wholeness. Peace and Wholeness cannot be achieved separate from Him. We can look to the world for these things, or we can look to ourselves but what we will get is counterfeit and we end up robbing ourselves of the true Peace and Wholeness that is available.
The Bible tells us that He formed us in the womb. He formed us IN Him and IN Him we were whole. When He shaped our true selves He created us whole IN Him with the gifts and treasures He poured into us. Everything we are to be, was planted in us by the hands of our Father. Then came our natural birth. And in that birth we came into sin, into brokenness. Separated from the one Who made us. Our journey with Christ is a journey of restoration to Wholeness, to our true identity; to becoming the one He pre-destined is to be. As we are being conformed in His image, He is bringing Wholeness and removing the brokeness left behind by sin (sinful thoughts, emotional reactions, pride, etc.). In the areas of our lives where peace is lacking is directly related to the fact that wholeness in Christ does not exist in that area. These are the places that we try to keep from Him, the habits that we hold on to, that leave us feeling confused, empty, broken and without peace. We feel that way because the wholeness that we seek can only come from Christ. We need to invite Him into those places of our lives to restore us to Wholeness and bring peace. As you pray for His peace, bask in His peace, and worship Him in the midst of His peace ,reflect on the healing and the restoration to Wholeness that He is doing in and through you. He is our Prince of Wholeness and in that Wholeness we find peace.
